The Story Behind
"She and her mother were cold with each other for two years.
Not a major conflict. Just the kind of chill that accumulates so gradually you can't locate where it started.
She went home for New Year. They spoke carefully around each other, both afraid of saying the wrong thing.
For two years she thought about saying something. Every time she closed her mouth.
Then her mother got sick. Not seriously, but enough. She bought a same-day ticket.
She arrived. Still not much to say. She sat on the edge of the bed. Her mother lay there.
Then her mother asked: ""Have you eaten?""
""Not yet.""
""Go look in the fridge. I made that thing you used to like.""
She cried in the kitchen.
There was no formal reconciliation. But after that meal, the way they spoke to each other was a little warmer.
Some relationships take a very long way round to come back. But water always finds its way to lower ground."
