"Her mother was the kind of person who was always right. As a child, she found it suffocating. Everything managed, everything done her mother's way. As an adult, their relationship sat in a cool middle distance. Tolerated through holidays. Endured. Then one year she got sick. Hospitalised. Her mother got on a six-hour train without discussing it. Arrived and didn't say anything soft. Just took over — her diet, her doctors, arguing with nurses about the room assignment. She lay in the hospital bed watching her mother's back and thought: this is how she loves people. Not gently. She just arrives and takes charge. On the day she was discharged, she said: ""Thank you for coming."" Her mother said: ""Don't be ridiculous. Get better."" But they'd been a little gentler with each other ever since."
